This movie explains how your computer learns the Ethernet address of it's neighbors on your local Ethernet.

When your computer has an IP message for one of your other computers, it must use your local Ethernet for delivery. However, unless it knows the corresponding, destination Ethernet address, the message can't be delivered even if the IP address is known. This 9-minute, narrated movie uses digital photos and extensive animation to show how the necessary Ethernet address information is exchanged.
